Jude Bellingham showed his class following England’s win over Switzerland as he consoled Manuel Akanji – before asking for his shirt.

It was Akanji’s penalty miss in the quarter-final shootout that proved decisive with the Three Lions advancing into the last four at Euro 2024.

The Manchester City centre-back was understandably devastated following the match, while England players jubilant celebrated reaching back-to-back semi-finals.

And as he looked to head down the tunnel at Fortuna Dusseldorf’s Merkur Spiel-Arena, Bellingham embraced him – giving the defender a hug and a handshake.

He then asked to swap shirts with Ajanki, who played with the 21-year-old at Borussia Dortmund for two years between 2020-2022.

Akanji duly obliged, with the pair again sharing a hug before they made their separate ways.

It’s the second time in a matter of months that Bellingham has helped deny Akanji the chance of silverware.

Bellingham, who scored in England’s 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Switzerland, was also on target in Real Madrid’s shootout win to dump City out of the Champions League quarter-final.

The midfielder then lauded Akanji on social media as he sent a three-word message in reply to the 29-year-old’s Instagram post.

A heartbroken Akanji said: “Brutal end to our @euro2024 campaign.

“What remains is pride in our achievements and gratitude for the overwhelming support from our fans and families, both in the stadiums and back home in Switzerland.”

Again quick to console him, Bellingham simply stated: “What a player.”

Bellingham’s kind words come after Akanji blamed himself for Switzerland’s exit when speaking to reporters after his side’s defeat.

He remarked: “The disappointment is big.

“It feels like I let the team down and let the whole country down.

“I tried to take responsibility and had a good feeling that I would score, but I shot in the wrong corner and I didn’t shoot it precise enough.
