Vadodara: He was just four years old when a speeding truck crushed his right arm. But this did not deter city lad Dhruv Patel from pursuing his passion. Dhruv, now 23, has been selected for the International Nottwil World Para Athletics Grand Prix Games scheduled in Switzerland next month.
As a senior player of the Regional Athletics Centre Vadodara, Dhruv has been selected for the international tournament that will be held from June 2 to June 10 in Switzerland.
As a para-athlete, Dhruv has been running 400 metres and playing in the T 46 category. After completing his graduation in sports management, Dhruv has been running 400 metres for the last five years. So far, he has participated in five nationals.
“This is for the first time that I will be participating in an international tournament,” said Dhruv, who practises for eight hours a day to sharpen his skills with the dream of a podium finish in the forthcoming tournament.
“I was four years old when my right arm was crushed under the wheels of a passing truck while I was crossing the road,” recollects Dhruv.
“The incident took a toll on me both mentally and physically. But with the support of my parents, I recovered from the accident and slowly developed my skills as a sportsperson. Being the son of a farmer, I started practising long-distance running and took up the game professionally for the last eight years,” he said.
