Ruby Walsh Cheltenham Tips on Day 4: Friday 17th March 2023
See below the Ruby Walsh Cheltenham tips on day 4, as the ex-jockey and still leading rider at the Festival picks his best bets on all seven races.
1.30: JCB Triumph Hurdle ITV1: BLOOD DESTINY @ 7/4
Of the three main Willie Mullins runners in the Triumph Hurdle, Ruby is siding with Blood Destiny. This 4 year-old has been kept fresh for this by missing the Dublin Racing Festival and Ruby feels the softer the ground gets for this horse the better.
2.10: McCoy Contractors County Handicap Hurdle ITV1: BALLYADAM @ 12/1
Ballyadam ran well behind Gaelic Warrior last time out and that horse franked the horse to run well earlier this week in the Ballymore. Ruby thinks if this De Bromhead runner can bring that form to the table here is overpriced over the main players in the race – Hunters’ Yarn and Filey Bay
2.50: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle ITV1: CORBETTS CROSS @ 10/3
Corbetts Cross was snapped up by JP McManus recently so will be racing for the first time in his famous green and gold silks. JP has already won a race this week with a horse he’s just purchased too and this 6 year-old is a horse Ruby has said he’s been with sine Christmas.
3.30: Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase ITV1: GALOPIN DES CHAMPS @ 7/4
Ruby has told the world that he’d love to be riding Galopin Des Champs in the Gold Cup this Friday. This Willie Mullins runner has won all bar one of his 6 chase starts, with the only blip in the Turners last year. He’s since won three times since that fall and impressed again last time in the Irish Gold Cup. Ruby expects this 7 year-old to make amends for last year’s disaster and win the Gold Cup for a third time for Mullins. Noble Yeats is Ruby’s idea of the main danger.
4.10: St. James’s Place Festival Challenge Cup Open Hunters’ Chase ITV1: VAUCELET @ 9/4
Vaucelet has been popular for the Hunters’ Chase for a while and it’s not hard to see why. This 8 year-old has won 6 of his 8 starts over fences and at his age will have more to come – Ruby is saying he’s a “big big runner”! Chris’s Dream is a class act on his day and is value according to Mr Walsh.
4.50: Mares’ Chase RTV: ALLEGORIE DE VASSY @ 13/8
“The class horse in the race” is what Ruby is saying here as he expects this Ricci and Mullins mare to take this. Has won both chase runs by 19l and more of the same is on the cards. At a price, Riviere D’etel is the danger for Ruby.
5.30: Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle RTV: SPIRIT OF LEGEND @ 25/1
Ruby feels one of the novices will win the final race of the festival and despite liking Spanish Harlem is siding with Spirit Of Legend. This Henry De Bromhead runner could run a big race at a nice price according to Ruby. Mike O’Connor takes the ride.
