Sophia Loren Hospitalized with Fractures After Fall at Swiss Home

Sophia Loren is in the hospital after suffering a fall at her home in Switzerland.

A representative for the actress, 89, confirmed to PEOPLE on Monday that the incident happened Sunday in the bathroom of her home in Geneva and that she suffered several fractures, including to her femur and hip. The rep added that they are optimistic about Loren’s recovery following her surgery.

News of the Italian star’s fall was also shared on the Instagram page for her restaurant chain on Sunday.

“A fall at her home in Geneva today caused Ms Loren hip fractures. Operated with a positive outcome, she will now have to observe a short period of recovery and follow a road to rehabilitation,” read the post via translation into English.

“Thankfully everything worked out for the best and the Lady will be back with us very soon. The whole team at Sophia Loren Restaurant takes this opportunity to wish her a speedy recovery. #sophialoren @sophialorenrestaurant.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Loren, who turned 89 last week, was due to open a restaurant in the Italian city of Bari on Sept. 26 — the fourth bearing her name. The Oscar winner was also set to receive honorary citizenship from Bari, but her engagements for the foreseeable future have been canceled, the outlet added.

The publication also reported that Loren’s sons Carlo Jr., 54, and Edoardo, 50, have been by their mother’s side at the hospital. Loren shared her sons with her late movie producer husband Carlo Ponti, who died in 2007 at the age of 94.

“I miss Carlo a lot. Sometimes I feel so lonely,” she told PEOPLE of Ponti, who helped discover her, in 2009. “It’s not true that when time goes by, [pain] heals. It will be three years since he died. The first time I met Carlo, it was at a beauty contest. He had a wife, two children. I didn’t think it would happen. Little by little I knew he was the right person for me.”

Known as one of the most iconic actresses of the 20th century, Loren last starred in the Italian drama film The Life Ahead, which was directed by her son Edoardo. She also appeared in the documentary film What Would Sophia Loren Do? in 2021.

Some 30 years after she won a Best Actress Oscar for war drama Two Women, Loren was again honored by the Academy in 1991 with an honorary Oscar, recognizing her as “one of the greatest treasures of world cinema, who, in a career rich with memorable performances, has added permanent luster to our art form.”

According to THR, Loren’s last public appearance was at the Armani fashion show during the 80th Venice Film Festival on Sept. 2.

In a November 2020 interview with AARP: The Magazine, Loren told the publication that she felt far younger than her years. “Sometimes when I say I’m 86, I don’t believe it. I feel 20!” she said. “When I look in the mirror, I cheer for myself. I don’t ask, ‘Are you great?’ or ‘Are you beautiful?’ No! It’s how I feel inside, how secure I am, how happy I am. That’s what matters.”
