ET NOW Global Business Summit 2024: Speaking about the pace of development of the Indian Railways, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw added that the rate at which new tracks are constructed has grown significantly. He added that the rate of track construction in the period 2004-14 was just four kilometres a day and it has more than tripled at 15 kilometers a day between 2014-24. He also said that in the last one year, nearly 5200 kilometres of track was added to the Indian railway network, which is nearly the entire length of Switzerland.

“Rate of new track construction, ten years back was 4 kms a day ten year back, today it is 15 kms a day, last year we added 5200 kms, which is like adding one Switzerland to Indian railway network,” Vaishnaw said at the ET NOW Global Business Summit.

Talking about the ministry’s plans for the year ahead, he added that the ministry plans to add 5500 kilometres of railway tracks this year, which is the entire length of Austria.

“This year we are adding 5500 kms of tracks, which is like adding one Austria to Indian railway network. We are adding one national railway network to our network, that’s the pace at which work is going on,” Vaishnaw said.

Vaishnaw also added that in the current fiscal the ministry’s capital expenditure is Rs 2,40,000 crore, of which nearly 85 per cent has been achieved.
