Switzerland will be forced to rely on a rookie goalkeeper in Tuesday’s friendly against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin as veteran Yann Sommer has been forced to withdraw from their squad.
Inter Milan player Sommer, who has been No. 1 for the Swiss for a decade, started in Saturday’s 0-0 draw away to Denmark but suffered an injury and has returned to his club in Italy for treatment.
Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Jonas Omlin has been called up but despite their age, back-up keepers Omlin (30) and Yvon Mvogo (29) have only ten senior caps between them and they will be tested in Dublin.
Captain Granit Xhaka won his 122nd cap in Copenhagen and the former Arsenal man is in the frame to start again in Dublin as he looks for more from a Swiss side who have now played five games in a row without a win and have failed to score in their last two matches.
“Everything wasn’t perfect, but we were very stable defensively and were also good with the ball,” Xhaka said after the Denmark draw.
“We had intensive and good training all week and there were a lot of positives. We had difficulties in the first 15 minutes and improved in the second half. It was a good start to the new year, but we have to keep going.”
