A Jewish man was stabbed in the Selnau area of Zurich, Switzerland. The incident took place shortly after Shabbat ended Saturday evening and is being investigated as hate crime, the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities (SIG) said in a statement.

Zurich city police reported that the 50-year-old victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, fell victim to the assault by a 15-year-old assailant, leaving him critically wounded. The assailant has since been arrested.

SIG provided details of the attack, stating, “On Saturday evening, March 2, 2024, a Jewish community member was attacked with a knife in Zurich Selnau at around 10 p.m. The victim is seriously injured and is in hospital care. The perpetrator was arrested on site by the Zurich city police. According to police information, the perpetrator is still being questioned.”

Reports from local website Blick News, citing eyewitnesses, suggested that during the attack, the assailant shouted hateful slogans such as “death to the Jews” or “death to Israel.”

Following the incident, the Jewish community in Zurich swiftly mobilized security measures, initiating a review of their safety protocols.

Expressing concern for the victim’s well-being, SIG conveyed, “The SIG is deeply shocked that a community member fell victim to such an attack. Physical attacks on Jewish people in Switzerland are very rare. The Jewish community has been spared from such life-threatening attacks for the past two decades. However, there has been a significant increase in such physical attacks since October 7th. The SIG’s thoughts are with the victim and his relatives. We pray for a full and speedy recovery.”
