Wednesday (12/6) sports viewership: NBA tops night, Iowa WBB up big

The NBA led the way on a routine night of sports Wednesday, December 6.

ESPN averaged 1.31 million viewers for Nuggets-Clippers and 1.05 million for Spurs-Timberwolves in an NBA regular season doubleheader Wednesday night, the two largest sports audiences of December 6. The Spurs’ loss — their 15th-straight to fall to 3-17 — ranks as the third-least watched game of the season on ESPN or TNT, with three of the bottom four coming in the past week.

Outside of the NBA, the top live sporting event was the Iowa-Iowa State women’s college basketball game on ESPN2 — up 146% from the same matchup on the same network in the same window last year (239K). A Pittsburgh-West Virginia men’s game followed with 255,000, down from UConn-Florida last year (315K) and less-than-half of its lead-in.

Elsewhere in the college game, Texas-Marquette averaged 289,000 on FS1, followed by just 99,000 for SMU-Arizona State. BTN drew 171,000 for Nebraska-Minnesota and 149,000 for Penn State-Maryland.

Shifting away from basketball, TNT averaged 311,000 for a Stars-Panthers NHL regular season game — up 42% from Sabres-Blue Jackets last year (219K). The Hurricanes-Oilers lead-out averaged 179,000, down just 1% from last year (Rangers-Golden Knights: 181K), but the least-watched game of the season. As should be no surprise, three of the bottom four have featured a Canadian team.
